    LAWANG SEWU

    Gedung Lawang Sewu, “the building with a thousand doors”, is THE iconic building of Semarang. The complex was constructed in phases from 1904 to 1919 and served as head office of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company (“Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij”) until 1942. In that year the Japanese invaders took over the buildings and used the basement as a prison, where several prisoners were executed. In October 1945 Gedung Lawang Sewu was the scene of the five-day “Battle of Semarang” between Indonesian independence fighters and Japanese soldiers who refused to surrender. Six railway employees died in the battle and are commemorated by a monument in the yard.

    BLENDUK CHURCH

    Gereja Blenduk, domed church, dates back to 1732 and is the oldest Christian church in central Java. It is good to see that the church is still in fairly good condition. The walls have been whitewashed, the copper dome caught the sunlight and looked almost new. On closer inspection the copper had become weather-beaten and the plaster on the walls was peeling off.

    LAWANG SEWU

    LawangSewu building constructed on February 27, 1904 with another name Het hoofdkantor van de Nederlands–IndischeSpoorwegMaatschappij(Headquarters NIS). LawangSewu used to serve as the office of the Dutch railway Company. Name LawangSewu which means a thousand doors derived from the shape of the building has a lot of doors and jendela.NIS entrust the design of the central office building NIS in Semarang to Prof. Jacob F. Klinkhamer( TH Delft ) and B.J.Quendag , an architect who lives in Amsterdam . The entire design process is done in the Netherlands ,and then the images were taken to Semarang . Judging from the LawangSewu blueprint written that the site plan and building plans have been drawn in Amsterdam in 1903.

Is different from the other buildings in the Old City , which generally enclose the path and do not highlight the shape , the building 's Neo-Classical style actually appear in contrast . The shape is more prominent . The location of this building is in LetjendSuprapto No 32 Jalan Kota Lama Semarang.
